Simplifying The Way Magazines Are Purchased: Zinio Launches Z-Pass

 Zinio, the world's largest digital newsstand and leading magazine app for iOS, Android and web, announced today the launch of Z-Pass, giving consumers three of their favorite magazines all in one place for just $5 per month. The first month is free and there are no commitments to term or magazine choice. Nearly 25 percent of Zinio customers read three or more titles across multiple devices making Z-Pass an even simpler way for readers to manage and access their favorite magazines.

The monthly cost of a Z-Pass is the lowest available in the market for a multiple-magazine subscription model. Z-Pass takes advantage of Zinio's "one digital library" where readers have all of their magazines in one place accessible from any digital device, including Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows 8 smartphones, tablets, laptops and home computers.

Feigenbaum Receives IEEE Pioneer Award

Stanford University Professor Emeritus Edward Feigenbaum, known as "the father of expert systems," has the distinction of being named the IEEE Computer Society's 2013 Computer Pioneer Award recipient. Feigenbaum received the award "for pioneering work in artificial intelligence, including development of the basic principles and methods of knowledge‐based systems and their practical applications." The Pioneer Award is given for significant contributions to early concepts and developments in the electronic computer field, which have clearly advanced the state-of-the-art in computing. Feigenbaum holds BS and PhD degrees from Carnegie Mellon University, where his dissertation, supervised by Nobel Laureate Herbert Simon, produced the first computer simulation of human learning.In 1965, Feigenbaum joined the Stanford University computer science faculty, where he and Nobel laureate biologist Joshua Lederberg started the DENDRAL project, producing the world's first expert system. DENDRAL's groundbreaking accomplishments inspired an evolution of expert systems, moving artificial intelligence out of the laboratory and into countless software applications. It also changed the framework of AI science: the power of an AI program came to be seen as largely in its knowledge base, not in its inference processes. Feigenbaum coauthored the first public list processing language, IPL-V, and founded Stanford's Heuristic Programming Project. He also co-authored and co-edited "Computers and Thought," the four-volume encyclopedia "Handbook of Artificial Intelligence," and popular-audience books "Fifth Generation," and "Rise of the Expert Company." From 1994 to 1997, he served as chief scientist of the US Air Force; and was awarded its Exceptional Civilian Service Award.Feigenbaum is a 1994 ACM Turing Award recipient, an inaugural member of the IEEE Intelligent Systems Artificial Intelligence Hall of Fame, and a member of the Computer History Museum's Hall of Fellows. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and was the first recipient of the Feigenbaum Medal of the International Congress on Expert Systems.The Feigenbaum Prize is awarded biennially by AAAI, (Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). The Computer Pioneer Award was established in 1981 by the Board of Governors of the IEEE Computer Society to recognize and honor the vision of those people whose efforts resulted in the creation and continued vitality of the computer industry.The award is presented to outstanding individuals whose main contribution to the concepts and development of the computer field was made at least 15 years earlier. The recognition is engraved on a bronze medal specially struck for the Society. Turn Your Old Cell Phones into Books for Kids!

We all like to upgrade to the latest cell phone, tablet, mp3 player, e-reader or laptop.  It's human nature – we have to have the latest and greatest, right?  This means that millions of Americans have a drawer full of "old" devices gathering dust.

Make them useful!  Donate them to Books for America, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to build and improve reading libraries in schools, shelters, and many other organizations.  They'll sell the gadgets online to fund the organization's literacy efforts, and donors will receive a great (and easy) tax deduction. Some of the phones will be given to organizations the organization works with which support abused women (or otherwise disadvantaged women or families).  

Books for America is a federally-registered charity and sells the items itself, so that all fo the net revenue supports the organization's literacy and educational efforts. Books for America will provide a pre-paid address label for cell phone donations. It can be downloaded at the organization's website. 

Here's what Books for America is looking for: 

Cell Phones, Blackberrys, iPods, Tablets, E-Readers and other electronic gadgets must be from the last six years.  Must be in working condition.  Please be sure to include the power cable if you have one.

Laptops - Must be from the last seven years.  Laptops do not have to be functioning.  Prepaid labels are not available for laptop donations. Books for America suggests mailing them via USPS's parcel post service or with a flat-rate Priority Mail box.

E-books Price-Fixing Lawsuit Settled

Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro , a consumer-rights law firm today announced that the firm, along with 33 state Attorneys General and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), have reached a proposed settlement with Macmillan over allegations of e-book price-fixing.

The settlement resolves claims filed by the DOJ, numerous state governments, and a class-action suit brought by Hagens Berman on behalf of a nationwide class of consumers.

The lawsuits alleged that Macmillan participated in a conspiracy to fix the price of e-books by coordinating with several of the nation's largest publishers, including HarperCollins Publishers, a subsidiary of News Corporation; Hachette Book Group; Penguin Group Inc., a subsidiary of Pearson PLC; Simon & Schuster Inc., a subsidiary of CBS; and Apple, Inc. to suddenly switch to an agency model for selling e-books. Hagens Berman 's complaint estimated that the scheme may have increased the prices of many e-books by as much as 50 percent by eliminating the ability of retailers to offer discounts.

"We were extraordinarily pleased that we could work alongside so many talented and dedicated attorneys general and the DOJ to present a unified front in dealing with Macmillan," said Steve Berman, Managing Partner of Hagens Berman and lead counsel for the proposed class of consumers. "We look forward to moving the consumer class-action litigation forward against the remaining defendants, Penguin and Apple."

Macmillan was the last of five defendant publishers to settle claims brought by the DOJ. In that case, Apple is the only remaining defendant, with a trial scheduled for June, 2013. In the consumer class-action case, Penguin and Apple have not agreed to a settlement.

Under the terms of the proposed settlement, Macmillan would create a settlement fund totaling $20 million from which claims to consumers who purchased e-books would be paid. In addition, the publisher has agreed to lift restrictions on discounting for e-books and will not be allowed to enter into new agreements restricting prices until December 2014.

The settlement must be approved by the court before funds can be distributed.

"This is a big win for consumers and is a testament to the hard work of the Justice Department and state attorneys-general, all of who devoted significant resources to this case," said Berman. "We look forward to presenting the settlement to the court and getting funds distributed to consumers who were wronged by Macmillan's alleged anticompetitive behavior."
