The Greener Gadgets 2009 conference, which concluded Friday in New York City, featured key stakeholders discussing the current state -- and future direction -- of green technology while unveiling innovative new eco-design products that benefit consumers while minimizing environmental impact.
Green technology's functionality, design and sustainability were the main topics of discussion among the top industry experts and innovators who discussed emerging energy technology, recycling programs, energy efficient innovation, and the importance of implementing green business strategies. Entrepreneur Saul Griffith kicked off Greener Gadgets with a keynote address on decreasing consumption while increasing product lifecycles to make technology products more like "family heirloom" products. Griffith, the founder of Low Cost Eyeglasses, Squid Labs, Instructables.com and several other companies, described how reliance on coal based fuels is unsustainable and argued for companies to develop renewable energy to meet the world's increasing consumption patterns. He also argued that reducing our carbon footprint is critical to long term global viability and that we must embrace a culture of maintenance and repair since the "throw away" option is no longer available.
In the "Measuring Your Hue of Green" session, top industry executives discussed green business practices and the challenges of calculating a company's total carbon footprint, putting a price on carbon and conveying to consumers why they should care about the cost of carbon. Moderated by Adam Aston, Energy and Environment Editor, BusinessWeek, session panelists also discussed the need for minimum energy efficiency guidelines and that public education is needed to convey to consumers how the cost of carbon impacts their pocketbooks.
The final session of the conference entitled, "Closing the Loop in Cradle to Cradle," featured a panel of industry executives and developers of some of the newest and most innovative recycling programs. Joshua Topolsky, Editor-in-Chief, Engadget, served as moderator, leading a discussion on the need for effective recycling programs. Panelists discussed the need to educate consumers on the cost of sending trash to a landfill and the ways to provide recycling infrastructure and rewards for those who recycle.
The Greener Gadgets Design Competition capped off the event with live judging and interactive audience participation. The awards competition featured 10 eco-design innovations, which had been selected from among 50 product submissions as the coolest greener gadgets. Based on audience feedback and the judges' consensus, Tweet-a-Watt received the winning prize with its power meter that automatically publishes your power usage wirelessly for all of your friends and followers to see. The Power-Hog, a power consumption monitoring piggy bank, won second place.
