Storage solutions providers SanDisk and Toshiba have announced plans to cross-license and jointly research technologies in an effort to bring a via 3D rewriteable memory solution to market, the Inquirer of London reports.
The 3D memory chip plans are actually rooted in a small R&D company called Matrix that SanDisk purchased in 2005. Matrix created a stir when announcing it developed a way to vertically stack memory arrays, as opposed to traditional horizontal placements, in an effort that promised drastically reduced memory chip development and production costs.
According to a statement from SanDisk, Toshiba has agreed to pay licensing fees to the memory maker for a closer relationship in the venture that aims to pick up where Matrix left off and bring viable stacked, 3D memory modules to market.
