Toshiba Reviewing HD DVD Strategy, May Pull The Plug
After weeks of disappointing news that has seen support for HD DVD erode nearly completely, representatives at Toshiba report that company executives are set to meet this week to discuss the fate of the next-generation DVD format.
Rumors have been flying throughout the weekend that Toshiba will cease production of HD DVD related hardware and software this week, though the company has said publicly that no such decision has been reached. The reports come in the wake of several significant problems for HD DVD since the new year, including Wal-Mart's decision last week to stock only Blu-ray players and discs.
While no concrete figures have been released by Toshiba, analysts say the company stands to loose hundreds of millions of dollars on the failed HD DVD production and marketing, Reuters reports.
