Not surprisingly (given its meteoric rise in popularity since it's launch exactly one year ago this week) Nintendo's Wii video game console tops a variety of consumer, news and analysts' lists of "must have" Christmas gifts this year, and will likely be in short supply far beyond December 25th.
Nintendo executives have publicly said the company is having trouble keeping up with blistering demand across the globe, and many retailers have already begun telling customers that while they have "significant" supplies ready for Black Friday sales, finding Wiis in stock after Nov. 23 may be very difficult.
According to USA Today, the Wii appears on 32 percent of reader wish lists, while the PS3 and Xbox 360 appear on 19 percent and 17 percent, respectively.
The resulting benefit for other video game marketers remains to be seen, with a some analysts suggesting the lack of Wiis will push consumers to buying Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3 instead. Others suggest that consumers will balk at the higher priced Wii alternatives, and opt for non-video game alternatives for holiday presents.
