Hot on the heels of Microsoft's announced of a two-game Xbox 360 bundle for the holidays, insiders are saying Sony will counter with a $399 PlayStation 3 available on Nov. 2, GameDaily reports.
Over the weekend, Sony announced plans for a 40GB PlayStation 3 in Europe to be available in early November, but was mum on whether or not the video game console would come stateside at the same time.
While the device will reportedly be at least $100 cheaper than 80GB model (which currently sits at $599 but analysts suspect will see a $100 price drop for the holidays), the 40GB model will be missing more than just an extra 40GB of HDD space. GameDaily reports that the device will have none of the current PS2 backwards compatibility of the larger model, and it will only have two USB ports instead of four and no memory card input.
According to analysts, the price drop may have twice the positive impact for Sony, as not only will the PS3 be on par price-wise with the rival Xbox 360, but also the Blu-ray packing console will be near in price to rival HD DVD players selling in the U.S. at the same time.
