Say Plasma HDTVs, Other Electronic Devices Use Too Much Energy Even in Stand-By
The Sun Newspaper in London is reporting that a coalition of officials in the United Kingdom are set to propose tight new restrictions on consumer electronics next week, including a plan to ban plasma screen televisions because of their energy consumption.
The announcement comes just one week after U.K Prime Minister Gordon Brown said he would like to "eliminate" the stand-by function on all consumer electronics because of the waste of electricity. That declaration came in the wake of a widely publicized report that two percent of Britain's total electricity use was the result of appliances in stand-by mode.
Focused mainly on products such as PCs and DVD players, the proposed plan would also target fridges, freezers and other appliances that have a track record of inefficient stand-by functionality, the Sun reports. The proposal would also require additional labeling on all electronic devices to outline their annual energy consumption compared to similar appliances..
