HP is working to change the way your customers shop for electronics and other retail items with the Retail Store Assistant -- a kiosk-based system that works to bridge the gap between the customization of online shopping with the tactile response of a brick-and-mortar store.
With the swipe of a customer loyalty card, the Retail Store Assistant can provide a personalized shopping list, relevant coupons, notice of associated store discounts or sales and even a map to where the items can be found in the store.
Developed by HP Labs, the Retail Store Assistant is linked to a retailer's IT system, and contains information regarding store inventory, client information and other relevant store info. According to HP, the system provides the streamlined shopping experience that customers associate with a positive online shopping, combined with the retail benefits of brick-and-mortar stores -- such as up-sells and impulse buys.
The system can also provide a bevy of up-sell opportunities on its own, HP reports, such as sale info on photography accessories and storage media when a customer purchases a digital camera at the store. HP representatives said a demo of the Retail Store Assistant that they are also working to include third-party product reviews for items and customer recommendations for related products. The information and availability of the customized shopping information is also easily accessible online, making it possible for customers to print or download their personal shopping info prior to heading out to the store.
