Advanced Micro Devices opens its virtual doors on the AMD Dev Central Pavilion on AMD Dev Central Island located within the Second Life metaverse today, part of a coordinated effort to extend its Developer Outreach programs into a virtual space for meetings, lectures, training courses and networking opportunities for developers.
According to AMD, as of June 2006, Second Life creator Linden Lab was running the world on more than 2,500 servers based on dual-core AMD Opteron™ processors. Coupled with the fact that the population of the virtual world has continued to explode since its launch in 2003, and is home to a variety of skilled developers, AMD is looking to show in-game developers ways to build inside Second Life, as well as how to utilize AMD technology in the real world.
"The Second Life metaverse is a gathering place for both new and established developers," says Paul Nolte, AMD Project Manager and Contributing Builder for the AMD Developer Central Second Life Pavilion. "Through the interactive virtual experience at the pavilion, we hope to provide developers with an outlet to learn and grow, such as helping them to optimize native code for multi-threaded applications."
